This site is about emergency preparedness on a small scale and reasonable budget. I started gathering things up for an emergency after Hurricane Katrina and the H5N1 panic of 2004, and since that time have been constantly adding, tweaking, and documenting everything I’ve done, and the issues I’ve had with various projects. It’s been a long process, 13 years and counting. I do have a pretty good plan in place, of course as with all things it’s never truly done but it’s getting close.
The original goal was to have enough supplies on hand to go for one year without any normal food or supply acquisition. That sound reasonable until you actually try to implement it, the process of which the posts describe. There’s some random editorializing about scenarios, that was probably a waste of time but did help guide some of the planning.
The site is arranged in the following categories:
- Home (background information)
- Site Index (so you can navigate the posts via content vs sorting through archives)
- Blog Posts (all the good stuff is here)
- Reference ( blank for now, but will contain lists and part numbers/vendors)
The earlier posts are more on background and rationale, vs later posts that focus on specific items or implementations (plan first, then execute). You can follow my progress in time, the early posts may have been superseded by later work so read all the related posts. BTW using posts as site content is probably less convenient for the reader, but is way easier for me.
A few notes on the site:
- Day366 was a cute theme idea but seems silly in retrospect. I once was focused on pseudo-homesteading post Day366, but I realize that is probably not in cards as a long-term plan. There are simply way too many things we need to go permanently off grid in the ‘burbs. I still have a focus on crops and water treatment, but more of an adjunct to stored supplies. I’m now just trying to get to day 366 vs looking past it.
- I have no idea what will actually happen in large scale crisis. Basically you will need sufficient supplies, to stay quiet, and be prepared to deal with people if needed. I will occasionally post about certain aspects of this but in general terms.
I’d suggest just reading the posts in order to start, but if you are looking for specific topics check the index. Hopefully some of this is useful, drop me a line if so.
